Help me climb my moutains

Lily Worboyes to touch the sky once more in aid of Writers Room.

In 2022 Lily climbed Mount Snowdon (above). She completed the climb despite being told she wouldn’t be able to do it due to the impact of her SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder). With Mount Snowdon under her belt she decided to attempt Scafell Pike in 2023. Again she made the summit, overcoming significant difficulties along the way, to raise £2,500 for Creative Walden.

Lily at Scafell Pike 2023

This year Lily will attempt to complete the final climb of the three peaks by conquering Ben Nevis, the highest of them all at 1,345 m.

Please read the incredibly candid story of the Scafell Pike climb. It’s both moving and inspiring. https://creativewalden.co.uk/news/lily-made-the-mountain/

You would never guess that Lily had any condition if you met her, which is a testament to her incredibly positive attitude to life, but her specific level of SPD is particularly debilitating. She has to try and deal with challenges every minute of every day; from dressing to brushing her hair and the overload of the senses by the things that most of us take for granted.

“I was moved to tears when I read Lily and Laura’s account of their Scafell Pike challenge.” said Writers Room’s Paul Bellany. “I channelled that into a poem which is appropriately titled ‘Brave’.”

Brave

Be brave dear writer
In life as in prose
See the world as no other
Take counsel with courage and a pen
Troubles stain but never break
Know they come not in your name
Infinite possibilities are drawn to the fire
Burning beyond your fragile facade
The rocks laid waste upon your path
Can’t conceal a world of wonder potential has built
Know that you’ll never walk that path alone
Never wander at a loss
The gentle white wings of love
Your abiding companion
Your first breath captured in her soul
Like a pressed flower to the heart
Stop and listen, to the beat of your own might
In the words that dance to the song of your distinctive voice
Move mountains
And whisper to butterflies
Embrace struggle and triumph equally
And find that space between that you can call home
